Melissa Rivers is ready to hang up the “naked dress” for good.

The former Fashion Police star and red carpet icon is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to the sheer, barely-there gowns that have dominated Hollywood for decades. Speaking exclusively following the rd Golden Globe Awards, the -year-old fashion critic made it clear that she’s looking for something fresh.

“I need the naked dress to retire,” Rivers tells People. “We have been seeing a naked dress since the late ‘s… and it just keeps going.”

While Rivers admitted she never “bought into” the trend of visible undergarments on the red carpet, there was one star at this year’s ceremony who managed to shock her by stepping completely “out of the box.”

That star? None other than Jennifer Lawrence.

The Die My Love actress, , hit the red carpet in a totally sheer Givenchy couture gown by Sarah Burton, featuring intricate floral embroidery and a matching shawl. The look immediately ignited a firestorm on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with fans divided over the daring choice.

“You didn’t expect it from Jennifer Lawrence,” Rivers says of the viral moment. “For Jennifer Lawrence to do that, I was like, holy s. Did I like the dress? Not particularly, but talking about stepping out of a box. Wow, and props for that.”

Lawrence paired the sheer ensemble with voluminous waves and fringe bangs by hairstylist Gregory Russell, while makeup artist Georgie Eisdell kept her glam chic and subtle.

Rivers wasn’t quite as sold on Jennifer Lopez’s take on the trend. The -year-old superstar arrived in a vintage Jean-Louis Scherrer haute couture gown, dripping in brown lace appliqué and hand-placed stones.

While J.Lo’s glam—crafted by long-time collaborators Scott Barnes and Chris Appleton—was “perfect” as always, Rivers feels the bar is simply too high for the “On the Floor” singer. “We’ve seen her do it better,” Rivers notes. “And again, such a high bar.”

According to Rivers, the Hollywood style cycle is starting to feel a bit like déjà vu.

“It’s all very cyclical,” she explains. “We go from bright colors to black and white… then we go back to cutouts, and we go back to naked. I just want to see them look like movie stars.”

So, who actually won the night in Melissa’s book? The Fanning sisters. While she called Elle Fanning a longtime “fashion darling,” it was Dakota Fanning who truly stole the show for her this year.

“Dakota’s always done great fashion,” Rivers says. “Dakota, I loved.”

Do you think the “naked dress” is finally over, or is it a Hollywood staple that’s here to stay?
