Jennifer Lopez has worn some iconic outfits throughout her career, but her latest “I do” moment is breaking the internet for a very heavy reason.
As fans flock to theaters and Peacock to catch J.Lo’s new rom-com Marry Me, all eyes are on the jaw-dropping wedding gown worn by her character, pop star Kat Valdez. While the dress looks like a fairytale on screen, it turns out the garment was a literal “behemoth” behind the scenes.
The gown, designed by Zuhair Murad, weighed in at a staggering pounds. To put that into perspective, the dress weighs about as much as a large golden retriever!
Costume designer Caroline Duncan opened up to Variety about the logistical nightmare—and the artistic genius—behind the dress. According to Duncan, it took five people just to move the gown from place to place.
Getting the “On the Floor” singer into the dress was an even bigger production. Duncan noted that it required a small army of assistants to help Lopez get in and out of the nine-layer creation.
The dress was a masterclass in maximalism, constructed from silk taffeta, horsehair, and tulle. It was then topped with an intricate mix of crystals, silver, ruffles, embroidery, and lace.
But there was a deeper meaning behind the heavy lifting. The film follows Kat Valdez as she prepares to marry her musical partner, Bastian (played by Maluma), on stage. When she discovers he’s been cheating moments before the ceremony, she impulsively picks a stranger in the crowd—Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson)—to marry instead.
Duncan explained that the dress serves as a central metaphor for Kat’s emotional state. She was “trapped in this claustrophobic dress that’s like the concert — bigger than she is,” Duncan shared.
The sheer volume of the gown represented how Kat’s life and impending wedding had spun out of control. “It’s a symbol of how that wedding had gotten too big, and it wasn’t honest,” Duncan added. “It had taken over her ability to see who she was marrying.”
Social media has been buzzing since the film’s release, with fans on X and TikTok expressing both awe and sympathy for Lopez’s stamina. “I would have tipped over in five seconds,” one fan joked, while another praised J.Lo for “making pounds of fabric look like a literal cloud.”
The film, directed by Kat Coiro, marks a major moment for the genre as the first big-budget theatrical rom-com of the pandemic era. With stars like Chloe Coleman, Sarah Silverman, and John Bradley rounding out the cast, the movie is already proving that audiences are hungry for a classic love story—even if the dress is a little heavy.
Ultimately, the gown symbolizes Kat’s journey from a reckless, “weighted” decision to finding something genuinely better. It’s a reminder that sometimes you have to shed the heavy layers to find out who you really are.
