Ralph Fiennes Opens Up About Feeling ‘Lost’ on the Set of Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Maid in Manhattan’

Ralph Fiennes may be a titan of the stage and screen, but even a Voldemort-level talent can feel a little out of place in a Bronx-set fairytale.

The acclaimed actor is currently generating massive Oscar buzz for his powerhouse performance in Conclave, but a recent stroll down memory lane has fans on TikTok and X buzzing for a very different reason. Fiennes is getting candid about his turn as the dashing Senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall in the Jennifer Lopez-led rom-com, Maid in Manhattan.

Despite the film’s massive $ million global box office haul, Fiennes admitted in a new interview with People that he didn’t always feel like the leading man he appeared to be on screen.

“I think I felt a little bit at sea sometimes,” Fiennes confessed, reflecting on his role in the Wayne Wang-directed “Cinderella story.”

The actor, who was already a two-time Academy Award nominee for Schindler’s List and The English Patient at the time, explained that the world of American politics and the specific “lightness” of rom-com writing felt foreign to him.

“Now who is this Republican senator?” he recalled wondering during production. “My antennae for things American has got better since, but then I think I was kind of sometimes a little bit lost.”

The film—which featured a star-studded cast including the late Natasha Richardson, Stanley Tucci, and a young Tyler Posey—followed a hotel maid (Lopez) who is mistaken for a socialite by a wealthy politician (Fiennes).

Social media users have been quick to react to the revelation, with many noting the irony that Fiennes’ real-life “cultural dissonance” actually mirrored the plot of the movie. “Honestly, him being a bit confused makes the character more charming,” one fan commented on TikTok. “He was the blueprint for the ‘distracted politician’ trope!”

While Maid in Manhattan received mixed reviews from critics at the time—currently sitting at a % on the Tomatometer—it remains a beloved staple for fans of the early s rom-com era.

Fiennes has certainly found his footing in American productions since then, with a career spanning from the Harry Potter franchise to Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Now, as he faces off against heavy hitters like Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) in this year’s Best Actor race, it’s clear that Fiennes is no longer “at sea” when it comes to his craft.

Still, there’s something incredibly relatable about knowing that even a legendary actor felt a little bit “lost” while trying to sweep J.Lo off her feet!
