Jennifer Lopez is proving once again that there is absolutely nothing she can’t do.

The global icon just sent the internet into a frenzy after Netflix debuted the first teaser for her upcoming thriller, The Mother, during their global fan event, TUDUM. Ditching the glamorous gowns and romantic mishaps of her usual big-screen fare, J.Lo is stepping into her most physical, high-octane role to date—and fans on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram are losing it.

In the film, Lopez portrays a deadly assassin who has been living off the grid for years. However, she’s forced to crawl out of the shadows for one heart-wrenching reason: to protect the daughter she was forced to give up years prior.

The teaser is a masterclass in tension, showcasing the -year-old superstar vaulting over railings, leading high-speed car chases, and undergoing grueling physical training in the snowy wilderness. It’s a far cry from The Wedding Planner, and the “Jenny from the Block” singer looks more than ready for the fight.

Social media was quick to react to Lopez’s “action hero era.” One fan raved on TikTok, “Seeing J.Lo as a John Wick-style assassin is the energy I needed for ,” while another commented on Instagram, “Is there anything this woman can’t do? The range is incredible!”

The project is helmed by Niki Caro, the visionary director behind Disney’s live-action Mulan, and features a script co-written by Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green. With a powerhouse team behind the scenes, the film also boasts an A-list supporting cast, including Joseph Fiennes, Gael García Bernal, and Omari Hardwick.

While Lopez earned massive critical acclaim for her role as the maternal-yet-manipulative Ramona in ’s Hustlers, The Mother marks her first true “out-and-out” action film.

In the past, J.Lo has flirted with the genre in movies like Enough and Parker, but those roles were often grounded in domestic drama or saw her playing a romantic lead. Now, she’s taking center stage as the primary muscle, following in the footsteps of legends like Liam Neeson and Charlize Theron, who redefined their careers with gritty action roles later in life.

This pivot seems to be a permanent move for the star. Not only is she headlining this Netflix thriller, but she’s already filming her next action-forward sci-fi project, Atlas, where she’ll reportedly go toe-to-toe with Simu Liu.

Between the intense stunts and the emotional stakes of a mother’s love, The Mother is poised to be the must-watch movie of the spring.

Fans won’t have to wait too long to see J.Lo in full assassin mode. The Mother is set to premiere on Netflix in May —landing just in time for Mother’s Day weekend.
