In the high-stakes world of the DC Universe, James Gunn is learning that there is no such thing as a “casual” click.
The DC Studios co-CEO recently found himself at the center of a viral conspiracy theory after fans noticed he hit the “follow” button on Andor star Adria Arjona. Almost instantly, social media went into overdrive with a singular theory: Arjona is being groomed to step into the golden boots of Wonder Woman.
Gunn, , attempted to play it cool during a recent sit-down with ExtraTV, laughing off the idea that his social media activity is a secret casting roadmap. He clarified that the follow was purely platonic, noting that he has known Arjona for years.
“I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out and said, ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman!'” Gunn shared. “But she was in a movie that I made seven years ago (The Belko Experiment). We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”
However, Gunn might have accidentally tossed gasoline on the fire when he added, “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”
While the compliment sent TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) into a fresh spiral of excitement, the director insisted that the search for the next Amazonian warrior is far from over. With Gal Gadot’s iconic tenure officially “over and done,” the vacuum left behind has fans watching Gunn’s every move like hawks.
“Adria has the look and the acting chops,” one fan noted on X. “Gunn knows exactly what he’s doing with that follow!”
Behind the scenes, the reality is a bit more “slow-moving.” Gunn confirmed that a new Wonder Woman film is currently being written by Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira, but it remains in the “extremely early” stages of development.
Meanwhile, the prequel series Paradise Lost—described as a Game of Thrones-style political drama set on Themyscira—is still in the works for Max. While rumors swirled that the show was canceled, Gunn recently took to social media to debunk those reports as “insanely wrong.”
Replacing an icon like Gadot is no small task, and by letting the Arjona rumors circulate, Gunn is essentially getting a free focus group. Whether it’s a long-standing friendship or a clever “soft launch,” one thing is clear: Adria Arjona is now the unofficial frontrunner in the eyes of the digital world.
The script may be years away, but the battle for the tiara has officially begun.
Would you like me to look into which other actresses James Gunn has recently followed on social media?
